Rabat – Morocco’s red city, Marrakech, hosted a regional symposium on the “ convergence of public policies” on June 6 with the primary objective of strengthening the convergence of public policies at the regional level.
The meeting, organized by the Wilaya of the Marrakech-Safi region, the Regional Council, the USAID program for inclusive socio-economic development of the Marrakech-Safi region (ISED MS), and Morocco’s Deloitte, aimed to strengthen the convergence of public policies at the regional level.
The meeting aimed to enhance coordination and complementarity between different sectors, improve the performance of public actors, and achieve key goals such as poverty reduction and investment promotion.
Key objectives of the meeting included adopting an integrated system for monitoring and evaluating public policies at the regional level, identifying sectors involved in the implementation of public policy convergence, establishing an IT system to facilitate data collection, evaluation, and sharing, and discussing regulatory aspects of convergence.
During the event, Karim Kassi-Lahlou, the wali of the Marrakech-Safi region and governor of the prefecture of Marrakech, highlighted the support of regional territorial institutions in laying the foundation for advanced decentralization and implementing the national administrative deconcentration charter in line with the recommendations of the New Development Model (NMD).
He emphasized the importance of coordination between public interventions and actors involved in regional development, urging all stakeholders to align local programs with national strategies and participate inclusively in the decision-making process.
Samir Goudar, the president of the regional council, underlined that the convergence of public policies at the regional level has become a key concern for political decision-makers.
He noted that administrative devolution has contributed to achieving convergence between the main orientations of the state and public management at the local level.
Goudar emphasized the necessity of uniting efforts between state institutions and local authorities to tackle the challenges facing integrated sustainable development.
Furthermore, USAID representative Alaeddine Serrar highlighted the collaborative efforts between the USAID program for inclusive socio-economic development of the Marrakech-Safi region and other partners.
The promotion of local authorities’ performance is a central focus of the program, which has provided support to 23 municipalities as part of pilot experiments. Additionally, participatory bodies and NGOs were supported to enhance participatory democracy.
The meeting included presentations on various topics, including regional dimensions of public policy convergence, administrative devolution, and the implementation of the administrative devolution charter.
Workshops were also held to discuss regulatory aspects, convergence in relation to regional investment, and data production and sharing.
The regional meeting brought together governors, local authorities, and representatives from university establishments, as well as directors and officials from central, regional, and provincial institutions.
The meeting demonstrated a commitment to enhancing the coordination and effectiveness of public policies at the regional level, reflecting the Marrakech-Safi region’s dedication to advancing sustainable development and achieving socio-economic objectives.
