Rabat – Morocco’s Customs and Indirect Tax Administration (ADII) introduced new measures to facilitate the return and reception of Moroccan diaspora as part of the 2023 Operation Marhaba throughout this summer season.

The launch of the annual initiative to welcome millions of members of Moroccans residing abroad, commonly known as MREs, with the government pledging several measures to ensure the success of this year’s operation.

As part of the measures, customs authorities have decided to raise the threshold of non commercial items imported by members of the Moroccan diaspora upon their return from vacation. The threshold will be raised from MAD 20,000 to MAD 25,000, while the measure is set to take into account the current inflationary trend worldwide.

Customs also decided to authorize the temporary admission (AT) regime for a passenger vehicle based on a legalized power of attorney.

In the statement announcing the new set of measures, Morocco’s customs authorities also suggested that permission for driving a vehicle under AT in Morocco by any overseas-residing Moroccan other than the AT cardholder is possible without prior approval from the customs administration.

MREs can benefit from this service provided that the original car documents and power of attorney are provided when driving the vehicle abroad, added ADII’s announcement.

Customs made available [email protected] to allow individuals “Exercise their rights of access position and rectification regarding the data related to AT operations handled in the administration’s computer system,” ADDI said.

The measure is in line with Law 09-08 concerning the protection of individuals with regards to the processing of personal data.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s government measures to welcome diaspora members include the mobilization of 33 boats from nine different companies to provide MREs with a smooth connection between Moroccan, Italian, French, and Spanish ports.

The sea trip will include 538 weekly sea crossings, with an estimated capacity of 500,000 passengers and 136,000 vehicles.

The annual initiative takes place between June and September. Last year, over 3.2 million members of Morocco’s diaspora benefited from the operation.
