Rabat – The African Union and the UN have congratulated Morocco for its efforts in bringing together rival Libyan factions, who reached an agreement on the election laws during a meeting held in Bouznika, a coastal town near Rabat.
On Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Spokesman Stephane Dujarric expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached by the 6+6 mixed committee that convened members from both Libyan faction parties.
“We’ve taken note of the agreement that was reached by the 6+6 Committee,” the UN spokesperson said, commending the committee’s efforts and thanking Morocco for its role in facilitating the dialogue.
“At this point, the results of the meeting are still being analyzed and we should have more to say later, I hope,” he added.
The AU made a similar comment on Thursday, congratulating Morocco for its efforts in bringing together the mixed commission in charge of drafting electoral regulations for the legislative and presidential elections in Libya.
“I commend the Kingdom of Morocco” for facilitating the committee’s efforts, tweeted AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.
“I welcome the agreement reached within the framework of the joint commission charged by the House of Representatives & the Libyan High Council of State for the drafting of electoral laws for the legislative & presidential elections in #Libye . I congratulate the Kingdom of #Maroc for its facilitation.”
On Wednesday, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by the mixed commission meeting, stressing that the agreement reached constituted an important step in the process aimed at finding a political solution to the lingering Libyan crisis.
“These discussions were marked by the examination of challenges related to the Libyan reality which requires novation,” he said.
Members of the Libyan commission reiterated gratitude to Morocco’s efforts, commending the country’s role in making inter-Libyan dialogue a success.
Omar Boulifa, a member of the eastern Libyan-based High Council of State, stressed that the members of the commission reached a compromise on all points of divergence relating to the electoral regulations.
“Two laws have been drawn up, the first of which concerns the election of parliament, while the second text concerns the election of the Head of State,” he said.
