Rabat – Morocco’s Mohammed VI Tower, Africa’s tallest tower currently in construction, has been awarded the prestigious “Best Performance in Terms of Engineering Projects or Work Developed by a SME” award at the 15th Annual Caminos Madrid Awards 2022.

At a recently held ceremony at the Matadero in Madrid, the award was presented to O Tower, a subsidiary of O Capital Group, chaired by CEO of BMCE Bank of Africa Othman Benjelloun, and to Bernabeu Ingenieros, the engineering consultancy firm behind the structure’s design.

The Caminos Madrid Awards, presented by the Madrid College of Civil Engineers, serve as a benchmark distinction in the construction industry. The awards aim to recognize the invaluable contributions of road, canal, and port engineers who play a pivotal role in economic, social, and sustainable development.

Expressing their gratitude, the engineering consultancy stated, “This is a project that has been with us nearly from the beginning of our studio; a tower we have contributed to rise to become the tallest in Africa; and above all, a shared project that has generated enormous pride in the city of Rabat and throughout Morocco.”

The company further added, “We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Caminos Madrid for this award, which we have received with great enthusiasm and satisfaction.”

Maria Dolores Esteban, the dean of Caminos Madrid, congratulated the winning professionals, companies, and institutions for their work that contributes to quality of life improvements.

Esteban remarked, “You inspired the entire profession and made us very proud.”

She remarked that “society faces important and urgent challenges, such as adaptation to climate change and hydrological planning, the creation and maintenance of sustainable urban mobility infrastructures, and the development of the circular economy”.

The Mohammed VI Tower, standing at 250 meters next to the Bouregreg River in Sale, is designed to be visible from a distance of 50 kilometers in all directions.

Boasting a total area of 102,800 square meters, the building comprises a tower set on a podium, and would be the tallest building in Africa upon its completion.

Earlier this year, the city of Rabat was featured in Time Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places” list, shedding light on the aspects that make the Moroccan capital a magnet for art and culture enthusiasts.

Time Magazine specifically applauded the LEED-Gold and HQE-certified Mohammed VI Tower, which offers luxurious accommodations and a panoramic viewing terrace at a staggering height of over 240 meters.

The recognition garnered by the Mohammed VI Tower through the engineering award further solidifies Morocco’s status as a leading hub for architectural innovation and excellence.
