Rabat – The Moroccan women’s tennis team won on Saturday the 60th edition of the Billie Jean King Cup organized in the capital of Nairobi, beating Tunisia 2-1 in the final.

In a dual game, Morocco’s Aya El Aouni beat Feryel Ben Hassen in two sets 6-0, 7-5, while Yasmine Kabbaj lost two sets to Tunisia’s Chiraz Bechri 6-4, 6-4.

Collectively, the Moroccan duo Malak El Allami and Aya El Aouni sealed victory for the national team, beating the Tunisian duo Feryel Ben Hassen and Chiraz Bechri two sets to one (7-6/6-3/6-0).

By winning this tournament, the Moroccans have secured their place in the Euro-Africa tournament in 2024 to represent the African continent.

Despite a defeat at the tournament’s opening against the host nation, Kenya, the Moroccan players persevered with a chain of victories against Uganda (3-0), Namibia (3-0), Nigeria (3-0), Botswana (3-0), and finally Tunisia (2-1).

“Throughout the tournament, our young players showed a great fighting spirit and concentration, not dropping a single point since the defeat to Kenya in the opening match,” the Moroccan team’s head coach Mehdi Ait Barhouch said in a statement to MAP.

Congratulating the Moroccan squad on their efforts in this competition, the coach stressed that this triumph is the fruit of several years’ work by the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation, which has made basic training one of its priorities, sparing no effort in supporting young Moroccan tennis men and women.

The Moroccan players expressed their joy after the victory, noting that they had come to win the Cup despite the weather conditions which made the job difficult at the start of the tournament.

The Kenyan team, however, finished third against Zimbabwe winning two sets to one.
