Rabat – Iconic Moroccan footballer Hassan Amcharrat, who is better known by his nickname “Assila,” died on Saturday night at the age of 75.
Assila was one of the legendary Atlas Lions generation who made Morocco’s football shine – particularly in the 70s.
He was part of the national team that clinched the first and only Africa Cup of Nations in Moroccan history in 1976.
Born in 1948 in Mohammedia, the legendary footballer played for Chabab Mohammedia.
Many football icons have mourned Amcharrat’s death, including former Chabab Mohammedia goalkeeper Iraqi Abdellatif.
“My friend and my older brother Al Hajj Assila passed away. May God have mercy on him and make his grave a paradise garden,” he wrote on Facebook.
The former Atlas Lion’s funeral will take place today in Mohammedia following the Duhr prayer.
Many Moroccan citizens also shared pictures of Assila, extending their condolences to the family of the former Atlas Lion.
Several legendary football players have died recently, including Larbi Chicha who died at the age of 86 in 2021.
Chicha played for Olympique de Marseille and represented Morocco’s national team on several occasions.
