Rabat – In a significant move, the UN Human Rights Council adopted today a resolution aimed at promoting transparency and safeguarding human rights in artificial intelligence (AI) systems. was co-sponsored by Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Morocco, Singapore, and South Korea.

Co-sponsored by Austria, Brazil, Denmark, Morocco, Singapore, and South Korea, the resolution was adopted by consensus. It marks the first detailed examination of AI development by the UN’s 47-country rights council.

However, China and India, while not calling for a vote against the resolution, expressed their dissociation from the consensus. China cited “controversial” elements in the text without providing specific details.

The resolution emphasized the necessity of ensuring that data used for AI is collected, utilized, shared, archived, and deleted in ways that align with human rights principles.

Ambassador Yun Seong-deok of South Korea emphasized the importance of guaranteeing and protecting human rights throughout the life cycle of AI systems. The United States’ representative, Michele Taylor, hailed the resolution as a positive step forward for the Council.

Speaking on behalf of the European Union, Ambassador Marc Pecsten de Buytswere of Belgium commended the revolution’s emphasis on the need for protective measures, due diligence, and human oversight in relation to AI. But he spoke of the urgency of adopting a cautious approach to ensure that human rights are upheld and respected amidst the rapid advancement of technology.
