Stuttgart – The relentless wildfires that have been sweeping through Greece have now spread across the border into Türkiye, prompting urgent evacuations and causing disruptions to maritime activities in the region.
The escalating wildfire situation, which originated in Greece, has taken a distressing turn as the flames crossed into Türkiye. Over 1,200 individuals from nine villages in the border province of Çanakkale have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Turkish firefighters are working tirelessly to combat the advancing forest fire and contain the situation.
The wildfires have consumed more than 1,500 hectares of land, leading to 48 individuals being treated for smoke inhalation. The impact has extended beyond land, with the crucial maritime route from the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara temporarily suspended. This has resulted in approximately 30 vessels in the Dardanelles Strait having to halt their journeys.
The tragedy in Greece is mirrored in Türkiye, where urgent measures have been taken to protect lives and property. At least six villages in the western province of Canakkale have been evacuated as a precaution. The flames, driven by strong winds, continue to threaten communities.

Türkiye’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister, Ibrahim Yumakli, reported that several villages, including Kayadere, Damyeri, Belen, Ulupinar, Yagcilar, and Kalabakli, have been evacuated, and preparations for potential evacuations in three more villages are in progress.
Despite the intensity of the fires, no loss of life has been reported so far. The Canakkale Strait, a crucial maritime passage, was temporarily closed due to the fire’s intensity but has since reopened after concerted firefighting efforts.
The battle against the advancing fires involves the coordinated efforts of eight planes, 26 helicopters, around 180 street sprinklers, various construction equipment, and nearly 1,100 personnel. In addition to the flames, smoke-related health issues have affected four individuals, necessitating ongoing medical treatment.
Both Greece and Türkiye are grappling with the devastating impact of these wildfires. International cooperation and collaborative efforts are essential in managing and extinguishing the fires that threaten lives, land, and communities across the region.
