Rabat – Morocco is among the leading diesel imports from Russia in the month of August.

Russia’s diesel and gasoline exports increased by 7% to reach 1.7 million metric tons only in the first 14 days of August, Reuters reported while comparing data between the months of August and July.

Shipping data compiled by Refinitiv show Morocco among Africa’s largest importers of diesel from Russia in the month of August, with 68,000 metric tonnes only behind Ghana, which imported 75,000 metric tons of diesel, and ahead of Togo, whose imports reached 60,000 metric tons.

Worldwide, Turkey tops the list as the largest importer of Russian diesel, with 42% of total supplies. This accounts for 720,000 metric tons.

Brazil is also among the largest importers with 140,0000 metric tons since the start of August

Morocco and Russia share stable diplomatic ties, with both countries reiterating their determination to boost cooperation in different sectors.

Maria Zakharova, Russia’s spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed her country’s determination to boost relations with Morocco, describing ties between Rabat and Moscow  as “very good and brilliant.”

The official made her remarks as part of the second African Russian Economic Forum and Summit held in Russia.

During the event, Zakharova stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries, stressing that this collaboration covers several sectors, including finance, tourism, business, and more.

Morocco’s imports of Russian hydrocarbon products have caused concerns among many, including MPs, who criticized the use of Russian gas to manipulate the market.

Some MPs demanded the creation of a parliamentary inquiry commission to investigate the situation suggesting that some companies use Russian imports and pass their products off as imported from the Gulf or other countries to set higher prices.
