Rabat – Morocco achieved an unprecedented peak in electricity consumption on August 11, reaching 7310.0 megawatts and marking an 8.2% increase from previous records, the country’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development indicated in a statement.

The country’s electricity consumption has reached a historic peak that underscores its growing energy needs, the statement detailed, adding that this marks an impressive 8.2% increase compared to the highest consumption figure previously recorded.

The ministry’s statement highlighted the pivotal role of global warming in driving this upward trend. Vital sectors of the economy, including tourism, agriculture, and fishing, have been impacted by the effects of climate change, leading to a substantial rise in electricity demand. Rising temperatures have prompted a surge in cooling and refrigeration needs, as well as increased reliance on electrical infrastructure.

Remarkably, despite the soaring demand, Morocco’s national electrical system successfully met the challenge. The evening peak demand of 8300.0 megawatts was comfortably managed, with a notable contribution from renewable and low-carbon energy sources. This accomplishment not only underscores the country’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions but also highlights the resilience of its energy infrastructure in the face of mounting climate pressures.

Climate projections paint a challenging picture for Morocco and the broader Mediterranean region. The frequency of days with temperatures exceeding 37°C is projected to escalate significantly, particularly in North Africa, southern Spain, and Turkey. The number of such days is predicted to double by 2050, which will inevitably further strain energy consumption patterns.

In response to these looming challenges, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development has called for measures to enhance the resilience of the national electrical system against climate risks.

Prioritizing energy efficiency and responsible consumption is paramount to mitigating the impact of climate change while promoting sustainable development. This approach aligns with Morocco’s commitment to safeguarding its energy security and fostering adaptation among sectors most susceptible to climate risks.

Minister Leila Ben Ali stressed the multifaceted benefits of energy efficiency. “Apart from securing Morocco’s energy needs and aiding vulnerable sectors in adapting to climate change, prioritizing energy efficiency will also play a pivotal role in reducing the nation’s energy expenditure.”
