Rabat – Morocco’s unemployment rate moved from 11.2% to 12.4% at the national level, new data from the High Commission for Planning (HCP) said today.
The unemployment rate moved from 15.5% to 16.3% in urban areas and from 4.2% to 5.7% in rural areas between the second quarter of 2022 and the same period of 2023.
Unemployment remains high among young people aged between 15 and 24 with 33.6%, followed by graduates by 19.2%, and women at 17%.
Unemployed people in Morocco amounted to over 1.5 million people at the national level, the data shows.
“The volume of underemployment increased in the same period from 939,000 to 983,000 people,” the statistics said, explaining that the rate moved from 8.5% to 9% at the national level.
Like many countries across the world, inflation has been impacting Morocco’s economy and job markets.
Statistics from HCP in April said 85% of households in Morocco reported a deterioration in living standards over the past 12 months.
Only 10% reported that living standards remained unchanged while 4% said that their living conditions had improved.
Half of Morocco’s households surveyed said that they expect conditions to worsen while 37% believe that the situation would remain unchanged.
Households also reported low confidence in improved employability, with 85% of people acknowledging that they expect unemployment to increase over the next 12 months.
