Rabat – Morocco wrote history on Thursday by becoming the first-ever team in the world, across both men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments, to achieve a historic qualification to the round of 16 following a heavy defeat in its first group stage game.
Following their win against Colombia today, the Atlas Lionesses silenced all critics and doubters who questioned their future during the Women’s World Cup following a 6-0 defeat in their opening game against Germany.
In a significant stride for women’s football in the region, the Atlas lionesses scripted their own remarkable journey at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Breaking barriers and stereotypes, they secured their first-ever qualification for the knockout stage of the prestigious tournament. This historic achievement was not only a testament to their skills and hard work but also a milestone for Morocco’s efforts toward fostering gender equality in sports.
The team’s display of talent and tenacity showcased the potential of women’s football in North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) region, inspiring young girls to dream big and pursue their passion for the sport.

The win reflects a dual success of Moroccan football, particularly following the Atlas Lions’ triumph during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Morocco was the first Arab and African football team to qualify for the semi-finals in the tournament history.
The performances of both the men’s and women’s teams have shattered stereotypes and proven that talent knows no gender boundaries.
Many celebrated the Moroccan women’s national football team, including FIFA which described them as “game changers and history makers.”
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also celebrated Morocco’s performances in an Instagram post, describing the win as “beyond greatness.”
“Morocco script history as they beat Colombia to win their second straight game and qualify for the Round of 16 in their first FIFA Women’s World Cup finals appearance!” he wrote today.
Morocco now has a decisive knockout game against France on Tuesday next week.
