Rabat – There’s something about Morocco versus the Netherlands that just hits different. Maybe it’s the history between the two countries. Maybe it’s the thousands of Moroccan families living in Dutch cities, watching with divided loyalties. Whatever it is, these two teams have never played a dull game against each other, despite meeting only three times.
It all started at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Morocco were already out, their tournament over before they even kicked off their last group-stage game. But they still made the Dutch work for it. The Netherlands secured a 2-1 win, but it was far from comfortable. Morocco went home, but they didn’t go quietly.
Then came 1999, and Morocco finally got their moment. A friendly in Arnhem, and the Atlas Lions walked away with a 2-1 win, their one and only victory over the Dutch so far. It wasn’t a fluke either. It was the kind of result that makes you realize this was never going to be a one-sided story.
Fast forward to 2017, Agadir this time. Same result, different winner, as the Netherlands edged it 2-1 again. Three games, three one-goal margins. At some point, that stops being a coincidence.
What makes this fixture genuinely special, though, is the human side of it. Many players have had to choose between the two nations. Khalid Boulahrouz, Ibrahim Afellay, and Anwar El Ghazi chose to represent the Netherlands. Hakim Ziyech, the Brothers Amrabat, and Noussair Mazraoui picked Morocco. Those weren’t just football decisions; they were personal ones. And when the two teams meet, you feel that.
Morocco are no longer the underdogs they once were either. After reaching the 2022 World Cup semifinals, becoming the first African nation to do so, the Atlas Lions showed up differently on the world stage. The respect was no longer something they had to earn game by game. It was already there.
Heading into their 2026 World Cup meeting, the Dutch technically have the better record. Two wins to one. But Morocco today is an opponent teams take seriously, and that tells you more than any stat can. When Morocco and the Netherlands play, expect a battle, because that’s all they’ve ever given each other.
