Rabat – The Moroccan women football team’s flight landed today at the Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca from Australia following a historic Women’s World Cup run.
Upon their arrival, a Moroccan delegation from the Royal Football Federation including the president of the FRMF Fouzi Lekjaa welcomed the Atlas Lionesses.
A crowd of fans were also mobilized at the airport exit to warmly welcome the Atlas Lionesses, who made history for making a debut at the Women’s World Cup for the first time in Morocco’s history.
The women’s national team also put on stellar performances during the competition, particularly during their two last group stage matches against South Korea and Colombia.
In the last group stage match against Colombia, the Atlas Lionesses caught the attention of international press through their dedication, team spirit, and defense showcased by all football players throughout the game.
Morocco’s Nouhaila Benzina also broke all barriers for being the first woman to wear a hijab during the competition.
Morocco exited the World Cup on August 8 following its defeat to France 4-0 during the Round of 16 game.
Despite the defeat, the Atlas Lionesses received warm support from fans and commentators across the world, who lauded the national team’s performances and their successful debut at the global tournament.
Despite their round of 16 exit, The Atlas Lionesses stressed their satisfaction with their performances as well as their successful World Cup debut.
“This is football … Win and loss,” the team’s captain, Ghizlane Chebbak said following the France game, stressing that the Atlas Lionesses have had to embrace the essence of the game, where victories and setbacks are both integral components of the journey.
