Rabat – Moroccan international footballer Azzedine Ounahi was voted the “Best African Revelation” for the 2022-23 football season in a survey by Foot Africa.
The Moroccan 23-year-old successfully managed to win over 44% of votes followed by Algerian Toulouse FC winger Fares Chaibi with 38%, and Congolese Cadiz winger Theo Bondonga, with over 7%.
More than 385,000 votes were made according to the outlet. Of those, over 171.000 votes were in favor of Ounahi.
The current Olympique de Marseille (OM) midfielder was the center of attention during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where he helped Morocco become the first African and Arab country to reach the semi-finals through creative and strong offensive performances.
“My God, where did that boy come from?” Luis Enrique, who was coaching Spain’s national team when they lost to the Atlas Lions, said of Ounahi.
Ounahi made his official debut with the first team during the 2021 African Cup of Nations with former head coach Vahid Halilhodzic against Ghana in a game that ended 1-0 in favor of Morocco.
Ounahi is now considered one of the most essential pillars in Walid Regragui’s lineup as he is a constant starter for the national team.
The Moroccan prodigy is still under contract with OM until summer 2027, and has an estimated market value of €12 million.
