Rabat – Moroccans have expressed outrage following a shocking video documenting child sexual abuse during a summer camp in El Jadida.
The video documents a disturbing scene in which a man is seen intimately kissing and hugging a boy.
One of the beachgoers documented the sexual abuse on video, expressing shock and indignation about the disturbing act.
“Oh my God, what is this?” the woman filming the act can be heard saying.
The family of the child who appeared in the video filed a complaint against the perpetrator following the spread of the footage, confirming that their nine-year-old boy was subject to rape and indecent assault.
Reports said that judicial authorities in Morocco opened an investigation on Sunday to determine the circumstances of the case.
The investigation is targeting a sports association president, who is facing a lawsuit for sexually assaulting minors who were taking part in a summer camp in El Jadida.
Local authorities said the suspect will be in custody for further investigations to uncover the rest of his crimes.
The crime comes amid outrage from citizens, who have been calling for stricter punishments against perpetrators of pedophilia-related crimes.
The appeals started following the Tiflet child rape case, when an 11-year-old was raped repeatedly.
On March 20, a Moroccan court sentenced the three adult men who were involved to two years in prison after they were found guilty of repeatedly raping the victim.
The three men were threatening the victim while committing the crime near her house in Tiflet, a town in northwestern Morocco.
The victim, now 13, is a mother to a one-year-old boy whose DNA test confirmed one of three rapists as the father.
Following uproar against the light sentences handed to the perpetrators, the court announced a new verdict, sentencing them to 10 to 20 years in prison.
In April, Morocco’s National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) called on the government to “solidify” urgent reforms to protect all children from all forms of violence, particularly sexual violence.
“Justice is rarely achieved in cases of violence against women and girls,” CNDH President Amina Bouayach said.
She also reaffirmed the importance of such reforms, stressing the need to recategorize crimes of rape and assault as sexual violence, and calling for harsher punishment against any perpetrator of sexual assault.
