Algeria has announced its decision to withdraw its bid to host the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, the newly elected president of Algeria’s Football Federation (FAF) has announced.
The decision came just a day before the anticipated announcement from the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of the host countries for the two AFCON editions.
The announcements will take place tomorrow September 27 in Cairo, Egypt.
The decision gives room to other bidders seeking to secure the hosting rights of the competition, including Morocco, Zambia, and a joint bid by Nigeria and Benin.
Senegal, Botswana, and Egypt are seeking to host the 2027 AFCON, while Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have also launched a joint bid for the tournament.
Morocco has been expressing its readiness to host prestigious sports events such as the continental football tournament.
The North African country has been organizing several football competitions, notably the Club World Cup in 2023.
Morocco also hosted the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in July 2022.
The experience Morocco has gained in hosting sporting events has been hailed by FIFA and CAF, among others.
In 2022, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Morocco has a potential as a “great country, not only for football, but as one that knows how to organize important events.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepe made similar remarks on the sidelines of the 2023 Club World Cup final, stressing that the North African country has positioned itself as a premier destination for hosting major international sports events.
Morocco is now preparing to bid for the 2030 World Cup hosting rights alongside Spain and Porutgal, in a first of its kind bid that brings together two continents.
