Rabat – Morocco has emerged as the third-highest recipient of foreign investment in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, according to a recent report by the Arab Monetary Fund (AMF).
The North African country attracted a total of $15.3 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2022. The figure underlines Morocco’s strategic appeal and status as a key player in the region’s economic landscape.
Meanwhile, Qatar emerged as the largest FDI recipient in 2022, securing approximately $29.7 billion. Saudi Arabia followed closely with $23.2 billion in investments.
The United Arab Emirates followed Morocco in fourth place, attracting nearly $10.8 billion in FDI, while Egypt ranked fifth after securing $10.6 billion in FDI in 2022.
The report revealed that despite the challenges posed by the global market crash in 2008 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the region’s economy remained resilient and attracted significant foreign capital over the past two decades.
In 2008, the MENA region recorded approximately $167.9 billion in FDI, demonstrating its attractiveness to international investors even in times of economic turbulence.
But it was 2022 that proved to be a banner year for FDI in the region, attracting nearly $200 billion in investment.
Over the past 20 years, some 9,854 foreign companies have made significant investments in the Arab region, collectively injecting over $1.5 trillion into a wide range of projects.
These ventures, totaling 16,153 in number, spanned several sectors, notably including renewable energy, chemicals, industry, and energy, among others.
