Rabat – After reports from numerous news outlets like Marca claiming that football legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel turned into a refuge for the earthquake victims in Morocco, the hotel management has reportedly denied the reports.
As the Pestana CR7 hotel was not affected by the major earthquake that hit Marrakech on September 8, the hotel management told Israeli news outlet Ynet News that they received several requests to house people.
The operations manager of the hotel voiced shock at the claims, especially those that appeared in the Spanish publication Marca, and indicated that they had received a flood of queries.
“It is not accurate to say that we are hosting refugees and victims,” the hotel’s management stated.
The hotel may have had some homeless people lounging in the lobby, or someone may have seen them on the street outside.
The reports appear to have been based primarily on an interview with a Spanish tourist who informed the local media that “all the hotels have become shelters for victims, including luxury hotels.”
“Many spent the night on the streets because they feared another earthquake. We got a room at Cristiano Ronaldo’s hotel, like many others who found refuge here,” he added.
However, Ronaldo’s hotel made it clear that “it is not a refuge for refugees.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside numerous other football stars and clubs, have expressed their condolences to the victims of the tragedy on social media.
Players for Morocco’s national football team, as well as players and coaches at the country’s several professional clubs, have been seen donating blood across the country as blood donation centers launched urgent appeals.
Located on M Avenue in Marrakech, the hotel is a part of the Pestana CR7 hotel group, which bears Cristiano Ronaldo’s name.
Other hotels owned by Ronaldo are located in Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, and New York.
