Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced today that it will observe a moment of silence at all its football matches to honor the lives lost due to the recent earthquake in Morocco and devastating floods in Libya.
The tribute will be incorporated into the games of different tournaments, including the CAF Super Cup 2023, the CAF Champions League, and the CAF Confederations Cup, among others.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the 54 Football Federations representing CAF’s member countries for the thousands of people who tragically lost their lives during the catastrophic natural disasters.
“The people of Morocco and Libya are in our thoughts and prayers and may Allah console and comfort them during this painful and difficult period. We wish all the people who are injured a speedy and full recovery,” he said.
A deadly magnitude 7 earthquake hit Morocco’s Al Haouz region last Friday, causing massive destruction to various villages across the Atlas Mountains.
The earthquake, which was the strongest to hit the region in decades, claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people and injured more than 5,000.

Meanwhile, Storm Daniel struck the Libyan city of Derna on Sunday, causing catastrophic floods that plunged the region into chaos.
The deadly storm has killed more than 7,000 people, with authorities expecting the death toll to rise to a staggering 20,000 casualties as thousands remain missing.
The city’s mayor, Abdulmenam al-Ghaithi, expressed grave concerns about the deteriorating situation in Derna, whose residents face the threat of a potential epidemic.
“We actually need teams specialized in recovering bodies. I fear that the city will be infected with an epidemic due to the large number of bodies under the rubble and in the water,” the Guardian reported him as saying.
