Rabat – The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of significant military assets to assist Israel amid escalating tensions with Hamas. The move, unveiled by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, involves two Royal Navy ships, surveillance aircraft, and a company of Royal Marines, signaling the UK’s commitment to supporting regional stability and humanitarian efforts.

The decision to send military resources to the region follows a recent surge in violence, which was triggered by a brutal attack on Israel by Hamas over the weekend, and the subsequent retaliation. The UK government has pledged to assist Israel by closely monitoring potential threats and activities, including the transfer of weapons to terrorist groups.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, Downing Street confirmed that patrols by sea and air will commence in the eastern Mediterranean from Friday. These operations will be carried out by the Royal Navy ships RFA Lyme Bay and RFA Argus, as well as surveillance assets and P8 aircraft. Furthermore, three Merlin helicopters will be deployed, along with a contingent of Royal Marines.

The mission is multifaceted, with the UK forces “on standby to deliver practical support to Israel and partners in the region and offer deterrence and assurance,” according to the statement.

According to the Downing Street statement, this British response aims to ensure regional stability and prevent further escalation of the crisis.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak underscored the importance of the UK’s role in the operation, claiming that the goal is to prevent the recurrence of the distressing scenes witnessed in recent days.

Sunak stated: “We must be unequivocal in making sure the types of horrific scenes we have seen this week will not be repeated. Alongside our allies, the deployment of our world-class military will support efforts to ensure regional stability and prevent further escalation.”

He went on to highlight the collaborative nature of this mission, with the UK’s military and diplomatic teams working in coordination with international partners to reestablish security and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the victims affected by the recent aggression from Hamas terrorists.
