Rabat – Morocco’s fertilizer giant OCP Group teamed up with NBA Africa to launch a basketball development program for the benefit of youth.
The program’s launch took place on Sunday in the city of Khouribga, a city 150 kilometers away from Casablanca. The initiative is in line with a multi-year cooperation between NBA Africa and OCP.
The initiative, according to an OCP statement, aims to make basketball more accessible to Moroccan and Rwandan youth by launching a Junior NBA league in the cities of Khouribga, Benguerir, and Kigali.
Each league consists of 30 boys’ teams and 24 girls’ teams from different local schools. The teams will take part in regular season games and playoffs until February 2024.
The championship matches are scheduled in March 2024.
George Land, the Chief of Strategy and Operations for NBA Africa commented on the initiative, commending the efforts to empower youth in Morocco in cooperation with the OCP Group.
“We look forward to building on the momentum of the inaugural Jr. League in Benguerir and Khouribga in 2019 and using the game to have a positive impact on more young people through this year’s programming,” he said.
The statement concluded by reiterating OCP’s commitment towards community development through different initiatives, including socio-economic activities.
One of the programs that the group launched in line with this commitment is the Act4 Community program that enables OCP employees to engage in educational, cultural, and environmental projects throughout Africa.
The initiative’s concept is to improve the standard of living of populations, being an active player to create added value in different areas – including entrepreneurship, agriculture, employability, culture and sports.
