Rabat – Morocco’s bell pepper exports to Germany amounted to 18,200 tonnes in the 2022/23 market year, securing the country nearly $30 million in revenue, new data from agriculture-focused news outlet EastFruit said.

The Moroccan sweet pepper exports to Germany also witnessed an annual increase of 10% to 20% over the past few seasons, the report added.

Quoting fruit and vegetable market analyst Yevhen Kuzin, EastFruit identified Morocco as the only major exporter of sweet peppers “that managed to increase exports to Germany last year.”

“At the same time, other countries, due to various problems, on the contrary reduced supplies to the German market,” Kuzin added.

Morocco has also been witnessing a series of challenges impacting its agriculture produce, including drought in recent years.

In 2022, cereal production went down by 60% from average, largely due to drought.

Consequently, MPs and activists called on the government to halt exports of goods to ensure sufficient supplies for local markets and protect purchasing power.

EastFruit added that sweet pepper is an “important export” category for Morocco, identifying the produce as the second highest revenue generator after tomatoes.

EU countries continue to top the list of countries importing Morocco’s sweet pepper.

“Over six years Moroccan producers have managed to increase exports of this product by 46%,” the report said, adding that the country exported nearly 170,000 tonnes of sweet peppers to 48 countries in the 2022-2023 market year.

The total revenue Morocco gained thanks to the exports reached $192 million during that season .
