Rabat – The humanitarian situation in the northern region of Gaza has reached a critical juncture, with all hospitals rendered “non-operational,” according to Youssef Abu Rish, the vice-minister of health for the Gaza Strip.
The dire circumstances are particularly evident at Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical complex in the area, which is grappling with fuel shortages and the relentless violence inflicted by Israeli forces.
On Monday, tragedy struck at Al-Shifa Hospital, where a premature baby and two patients lost their lives due to the consequences of ongoing fuel shortages exacerbated by intense Israeli military aggression on the Gaza Strip.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised the alarm on the catastrophic and perilous conditions at Al-Shifa Hospital. Losing contact with the facility on Sunday, the WHO received distressing reports from doctors indicating a shortage of essential supplies such as food and water.
A day earlier, Palestinian Health Minister Mai Alkaila warned: “There is a catastrophe unfolding in hospitals, with patients now dying without receiving their treatments, such as children and adults with kidney failure who are perishing at home without undergoing dialysis sessions.”
The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office took to social media, stating that the hospital “was surrounded by tanks.”
“Staff reported a lack of clean water & the imminent shutdown of critical functions, including ICUs, ventilators, and incubators, due to a lack of fuel, putting the lives of patients at immediate risk,” they added.
In a desperate plea to the global community, WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus implored nations to break their silence and take action.
“The world cannot stand silent while hospitals, which should be safe havens, are transformed into scenes of death, devastation, and despair,” he said.
The Israeli aggression on Gaza has claimed more than 11,000 Palestinian victims so far, including over 4,000 children. More than 28,000 have suffered wounds due to the relentless bombardments.
