Khaled Ahmed El-Enany Aly Ezz, former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities and current Egyptian candidate for the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the 2025-2029 term, began a two-day visit to Morocco on November 1 and 2.
During the visit, El–Enany held talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, aiming to gather support for his candidacy.
El-Enany’s candidacy was approved by the Arab League at the 160th ordinary session of the Council of Permanent Representatives chaired by Morocco on September 4.
Trained as an Egyptologist, El-Enany’s career focused primarily on higher education and research, before taking up the ministerial role in 2016. He has written a vast body of literature, mainly on ancient Egypt.
The current UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, a French national, began her tenure in 2017, and was re-elected for a second term in 2021.
The term for the Director-General’s position, previously set at six years, has been reduced to four years. If elected, El-Enany would become the first Arab leader of the organization since its establishment in 1945.
