Rabat – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reiterated his country’s rejection of Israel’s aggression targeting civilians in Gaza.

Sanchez made his remarks during his two-day visit to Israel, where he met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

El Pais quoted Sanchez as saying that Spain shares Israel’s pain over “the terrible events of October 7,” but urged the occupying power to respect international law.

“Its response cannot involve the deaths of innocents, including thousands of children. We need to stop this humanitarian catastrophe and stop the suffering of the Palestinians. Civilians must be protected. We need to look for a humanitarian ceasefire,” he added.

Sanchez also recalled Spain‘s support for the two-state solution to end the situation.

“We need to achieve the establishment of a viable Palestinian state. Israelis and Palestinians have the right to live in peace and security,” he said.

On Wednesday, reports suggested that Hamas and Israel agreed on a four-day truce as part of an agreement brokered by the US and Qatar.

Under the agreement, the truce will also allow 300 aid trucks per day to enter Gaza.

News reports, however, said that the long-awaited ceasefire would not take effect before Friday.

“The contacts on the release of our hostages are advancing and continuing constantly,” the Guardian quoted Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi as saying.

He added that the start of the release will take place “according to the original agreement between the sides, and not before Friday.”
