Rabat – Morocco’s national football team won the award of the best African team from the Confederation of African Sports Federations (AUCSA) on Saturday in Cairo.
The award was given in recognition of the team’s unparalleled performance during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. During the tournament, the team made history, becoming the first African and Arab team to reach the semifinals.
The AUCSA ceremony was attended by a number of high-profile individuals from the football world including Hamza El Hajoui, the first deputy to the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, who accepted the accolade on behalf of the team.
The trophy was presented by Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi, who praised the team’s remarkable accomplishment.
Speaking to the press, El Hajoui expressed delight at the recognition, saying that the honor is a testament to the team’s outstanding representation of the African continent on the global sporting stage.
The AUCSA awards celebrated 11 individuals and teams across various categories. Notable recipients of the awards included the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports for their exceptional service to African sports, Liberia’s George Weah honored as a global African football star, and Senegalese Fatma Samoura, former Secretary-General of FIFA, recognized as the best female sports personality in Africa.
Among other honorees were South African Sam Ramsamy, President of the African Swimming Federation, acclaimed for exemplary sports management, and the Egyptian club Al-Ahly, acknowledged as the best African club.
In addition, Senegal’s Sadio Mane received an award for the best African athlete, while Tunisian Ons Jabeur was named the best African sportswoman.
The event also featured the second annual International Conference on Combating Sports Corruption in Africa. The conference addressed pivotal issues such as “Media and Sports Corruption” and “Preventive Measures Against Corruption.”
