Join on Telegram Rabat – Oman and Morocco have signed on December 3 in Dubai an agreement meant to further their collaboration in the areas of sustainable development and the environment.
The agreement was signed at the Morocco Pavilion at the UN Climate Conference (COP28) by Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali, and the Chairman of the Omani Environment Agency Abdallah bin Ali Al-Amri.
The agreement is compliant with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and the resolutions and recommendations of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20).
In addition, it represents a mutual understanding regarding the difficulties presented by the Covid-19 pandemic and the necessity of an economic rebound that considers sustainable growth and environmental issues.
The agreement also seeks to establish a “win-win strategy” to provide a framework for bilateral collaboration in the areas of sustainable development and the environment.
Other areas the agreement covers include environmental governance, monitoring and assessment, and waste and chemicals management.
In order to execute multilateral international environmental agreements, the convention allows for the exchange of knowledge in the areas of sustainable development, technical support, and capacity building.
Benali has said that the agreement is a crucial component of bolstering the unique bilateral ties between Oman and Morocco.
She went on to say that the agreement shows how committed both nations are to achieving SDGs and protecting the environment.
The minister emphasized that Morocco has adopted several ambitious strategies such as the National Sustainable Development Strategy, which offers a unified framework for promoting sustainability into sectoral and regional development programs.
She also mentioned the National Energy Strategy, which aims to raise the share of renewable energy in the production of electricity to 52% by 2030.
