Spanish multinational retailer Zara has joined a growing list of brands triggering boycotts due to their links to Israel as the occupying forces continue their bloody war in Gaza..
The brand sparked controversy after the launch of its new collection that appeared to many to take inspiration from the devastating situation in Gaza.
Pictures from the collection’s promotional campaign, “The Jacket,” show mannequins wrapped in white cloth and plastic.
Many said the imagery looks too similar to images of bodies wrapped in the traditional all-white burial attire in Gaza, condemning the appropriation of such symbols and scenes of destruction for the campaign.
“Using death and destruction as a backdrop for fashion is beyond sinister, its complicity […] should outrage us as consumers. Boycott Zara,” Palestinian artist Hazem Harb wrote on his Instagram.
Many others have voiced their frustration and anger, appealing for a boycott of the brand for disrespect displayed amid the situation in Gaza.
“Our suffering is not your Aesthetic. Our dying children are not your source of inspiration. Have some shame. Some humanity,” one wrote.
Others shared pictures of Palestinians holding the dead bodies of their beloved ones wrapped in white clothing and compared them to the branding used by Zara in its new collection.
“Living with most disgusting people,” one wrote, while using the hashtag #boycott-Zara.
“They announced their new collection using the genocide in Gaza. And also they literally use Uyghur Muslims as forced labor in production of their merchandise,” a user on X, formerly Twitter, said.
In 2021, the company faced a similar campaign after its head designer made anti-Palestinian comments on social media.
“Maybe if your people were educated then they wouldn’t blow up the hospitals and schools that Israel helped to pay for in Gaza,” Head Designer Vanessa Perilman had told Palestinian model Qaher Harhash on Instagram.
Since October 7, many have joined the boycott campaign against several multinational brands for their links to Israel and in some cases their support for them.
The brands include McDonalds, KFC, Starbucks, and H&M, among others.
Many reports have shown that the boycott has been impacting companies’ sales, including Starbucks.
Earlier this week, reports said that Starbucks lost $11 billion in value due to poor sales, strikes, and boycotts.
