Rabat – Spanish police announced on Saturday that they dismantled a network that helped plan and finance the activities of ISIS members, in collaboration with Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
Spanish authorities arrested five people in the provinces of Valencia, Caceres, Alicante, and Gipuzkoa, according to a press release from Spanish police.
The network’s members were allegedly collecting funds from crimes committed in Europe to finance terrorist activities, the statement added.
The arrested individuals were moving large sums of money through cryptocurrencies and international shipments, with nearly 200,000 euros (MAD 2.2 million) being seized during the search.
The statement added that some members of the network also attempted to indoctrinate people into extremist ideologies and pledged to support them if they decided to carry out terrorist attacks.
The investigation has been ongoing for two years, according to the statement, and concluded that the group had been involved in the planning of at least two attacks which were ultimately neutralized.
The statement concluded that the case showcases the importance of international cooperation to neutralize terrorist threats.
Since the restoration of full bilateral ties between Morocco and Spain in 2022, the two countries have upped their cooperation in various fields, including security and intelligence.
The cooperation encompasses various threats, including but not limited to drug trafficking, irregular migration, and terrorism.
