Rabat – Tangier’s police department apprehended ten individuals allegedly involved in a criminal network scamming irregular immigrants.
The operation unveiled that the criminal network was involved in abduction and violent robbery.
The suspects, aged between 17 and 33, were taken into custody following the uncovering of their roles in deceiving individuals through social media.
The criminal network allegedly lured individuals seeking to illegally migrate to Europe to the outskirts of Tangier. Members of the criminal network would then subject the individuals to violent theft.
Security sources disclosed that the ensuing search operations resulted in the confiscation of two utility vehicles, bladed weapons, and numerous mobile devices containing digital evidence linking them to criminal activities.
While the adult suspects remain in police custody, two minor girls have been handed over for further investigation under the prosecutor’s office, with the goal of unveiling the specific circumstances related to the case.
The arrest is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to crack down on online scams promoting irregular migration.
In August 2023, Morocco’s police department dismantled a criminal network involved in similar crimes targeting Sub-Saharan African migrants in Nador.
The criminal network exploited would-be irregular migrants, luring them with promises of helping them cross to Europe.
However, the victims were instead held captive and physically assaulted. The criminal network equally stole the money and personal belongings of the migrants.
