Rabat – The Moroccan national handball team secured a convincing win against Gabon with a scoreline of 33-25 on Friday evening in Cairo.
This triumph marked the team’s second consecutive victory in the 26th edition of the Men’s African Nations Handball Championship (CAN-2024), hosted in Egypt.
Under the guidance of coach Abdesslam Mesbah, the Moroccan squad demonstrated it’s dominance throughout the match, ultimately securing a comfortable lead.
The collective efforts of key players such as Mohamed Bentaleb, Younes Mansari, and Mohamed Azni played a crucial role in the team’s success.
This latest triumph follows Morocco’s initial win against Libya (30-25) on the opening day of the competition, solidifying their position as strong contenders in the qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
As the first-round progresses, the Moroccan national team is set to face their Algerian counterparts on Sunday, in what promises to be a highly anticipated encounter.
The CAN-2024 features sixteen teams divided into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group, determined by their performance in the first round, will advance to the quarter-finals.
Subsequently, the qualified teams will engage in knockout matches until the tournament concludes with the final on January 27.
In Group A, the draw placed Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, and Rwanda, while Group B comprises Egypt, Guinea, Cameroon, and Congo-Brazzaville. Group D consists of Tunisia, Angola, Nigeria, and Kenya.
Established in 1974, the Men’s African Nations Handball Championship has witnessed only three nations clinching the continental title in its 25 previous editions.
Notably, Tunisia has emerged victorious ten times, while Egypt boasts eight championship wins.
