Rabat – A French couple from the Carcans commune in Bordeaux has been arrested in Spain for allegedly plotting to “sacrifice” their five-year-old child in Morocco.
The couple, a 39-year-old father and a 30-year-old mother, were apprehended in Spain on December 21. According to French media, the parents were suspected of intending to “sacrifice” their child in the Sahara, believing that he was possessed.
They were presented before the court on January 12 and subsequently incarcerated, Le Figaro reported today.
The arrest took place in the port of Algesiras by the Spanish Civil Guard as the couple was preparing to board a ferry to Tangier, Morocco.
The arrest followed an open investigation initiated by the Bordeaux public prosecutor on December 19, triggered by a concerned request regarding the welfare of the couple’s five-year-old son.
The parents, who are founders of a popular music school in Carcans with over 250 students, were originally charged with “kidnapping and unlawful detention to facilitate a crime or offense.” However, that charge was changed to “criminal association.”
The child has been repatriated to France and temporarily placed with other family members.
According to the Spanish Civil Guard, the couple is believed to suffer from “psychiatric problems.”
The mayor of Carcans, Patrick Meiffren, expressed his astonishment at the incident, highlighting that the couple were well-integrated members of the community.
The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the actions were indeed planned or not as a means for the parents to sacrifice their child as a part of -what the French media described as – “a form of initiatory journey.”
The case has deeply unsettled the residents of Carcans and raised questions about the mental well-being of the couple and circumstances surrounding their alleged intentions.
