Rabat – Indonesian authorities have carried out a significant operation as part of the ongoing fight against the consumption of dog meat.
In a recent operation, Indonesian police intercepted a truck loaded with over 220 dogs on their way to the slaughterhouse.
According to reports, police intercepted the vehicle late on Saturday night in Semarang city on the island of Java.
South China Morning Post said today police arrested five truck crew members, who will face different charges under animal welfare regulations.
The truck members are expected to face five years in prison.
“We have had information about this for the past month, but only tonight were able to thwart the transport of 226,” a police chief told reporters on Saturday night.
Indonesia is among the countries that permit the sale of dog and cat meat. A viral campaign has gained momentum recently leading to implementing local bans on the sale of dogs and cat meat.
In August last year, Al Jazeera reported that dog meat sellers in Indonesia have been fearing for their future after the crackdown on sales.
“Myself and other dog meat sellers have already discussed it, and we would go and protest outside the mayor’s office if they made the sale of dog meat illegal here,” the owner of a restaurant serving dog meat told Al Jazeera.
Channel NewsAsia said in September last year that more than one million dogs and thousands of cats were slaughtered in Indonesia.
Los Angeles Times also quoted a report saying that as much as 7% of Indonesians eat dog meats.
