Rabat – UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Cameron has emphasized the importance of bilateral ties with Morocco, describing relations between the two countries as “very good.”
Earlier this week, Cameron emphasized the importance of ties between the two countries as well as their cooperation at different levels, including trade. He said that there is a “huge appetite on behalf of Morocco… to be far more outgoing and outward facing about trade and investment.”
Cameron’s remarks came a few days after British MP Liam Fox also reiterated the importance of maintaining strong cooperation between Morocco and the UK.
In the interview published by Medi1TV last week on Sunday, the MP also called on the UK to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara, stating that “the UK has fallen behind the US on this issue.”
The US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara in December 2020, when the Trump administration issued a proclamation that applauded Morocco’s commitment to the UN-led process, citing the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the best route to a lasting resolution of the territorial dispute.
“I reminded Mr. Cameron, who is a friend, and whose government I was a member of when he was Prime Minister, of Morocco’s importance on the multilateral stage, both politically and economically,” said the British MP.
Alastair McPhail, the UK government’s Envoy for the UK-African Investment Summit 2024, has joined the growing chorus of MPs, stressing the importance of further bolstering ties with Morocco.
“We’re delighted to see your success in bidding for the World Cup, and of course, we have an interest in bidding for some of those contracts,” he said recently at a reception at the UK consulate in Casablanca.
