Rabat – Atlas Lions striker Youssef En-Nesyri has made history by becoming the first Moroccan to score in four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) editions.
As dominated and led in its AFCON group opener against Tanzania this evening, the Sevilla striker brought comfort and style to Morocco’s statement win by scoring the Atlas Lions’ third goal in the 80th minute.
In addition to confirming pre-match predictions of an easy win for the Atlas Lions, the goal came with an added significance for En-Nesyri’s standing in the history of the Moroccan national team: It made the 26-year-old striker the first Moroccan to score in four AFCON tournaments.
En-Nesyri scored his maiden AFCON goal in the 72nd minute of Morocco’s 2-1 win over Togo in Gabon in 2017.
In the following continental tournament, which was played in Egypt in 2019, En-Nesyri scored the only goal in Morocco’s group clash against Cote d’Ivoire.

In the same tournament, the Sevilla striker also scored a crucial equalizer in the Atlas Lions’ round of 16 game against Benin.
At the 2021 AFCON, meanwhile, En-Nesyri scored the Atlas Lions’ first goal in their 2-1 triumph over Malawi in the round of 16.
With this evening’s goal against Tanzania, En-Nesyri has not only positioned himself as the first Moroccan to reach the milestone of scoring in four consecutive Afcon tournaments, but he has also announced himself as one of the players to watch as Morocco looks to build on their World Cup heroics to end a 48-year wait for a second continental trophy.
En-Nesyri is also a key football player for his international club Sevilla FC. Last year, the Atlas Lion scored 25 goals in La Liga , earning the title of the league’s top scorer for the current calendar year.
