Rabat – The General Staff of the Southern Zone is hosting in Agadir the main planning meeting for the 20th annual“African Lion 2024,” a US-Morocco joint military exercise. The meeting will take place from January 29 to February 2.
The announcement was made on Monday by the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) in a press release.
The meeting will bring together representatives from the FAR and the United States Armed Forces, in addition to ten partner countries.
The meeting would allow planners to finalize the details of the various activities of African Lion 2024, the release detailed.
The statement explained that the event will include training in several operational domains, a planning exercise for staff officers, inter-arm and joint maneuvers, civil-military actions, and exercises in NRBC decontamination (Nuclear, Radiological, Biological, and Chemical).
The African Lion 2024 exercise aims to develop operational, technical, and procedural interoperability between the FAR and the forces of participating countries, as well as training in the planning and conduct of military drills.
The event is slated to happen between May 20 to May 31 of this year and will take place throughout Morocco in the regions of Agadir, Tan-Tan, Mehbes, Tata, Kenitra, Ben Guerir, and Tifnit.
The inclusion of Mehbes reflects the US’ position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara.
African Lion is the largest multinational exercise on the African continent, with the objective to promote peace and security in the region.
The event is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, which, according to the organizers, is “a sign of the strength and sustainability of the relationships between the Royal Armed Forces and their American counterparts.”
