Rabat – Morocco’s security services found a charred body on Sunday morning as law enforcement authorities were evacuating irregular migrants from the “Beggar” area near the Oulad Ziane bus station.
Police transferred the dead body to the morgue for autopsy, and a judicial investigation has been opened to identify the victim’s identity and determine the circumstances of the case.
The investigation also seeks to determine the responsibilities and potential suspects involved in the case. Local authorities in the Al Fida Mers Sultan district prefecture have said that some immigrants set fire to the area.
Morocco has been both a destination and a transit country for sub-Saharan migrants.
While some choose Morocco as a destination to escape war or poor living conditions in their homeland, others use the North African country as a transit country before forging the perilous crossing to reach Europe.
Many sub-Saharan migrants have settled camps near the Oulad Ziane bus station, taking it as a refuge.
The region witnessed several challenges, including fire incidents.
In July 2019, a fire broke out at the plastic tents used at a campsite by undocumented migrants.
The fire did not result in any casualties. In December 2018, a similar situation occurred in the same area.
In November 2017, a number of videos also detected clashes in the bus station, which required police intervention.
