Rabat – Morocco continues to be the leading supplier of fresh fruits and vegetables to the European Union (EU), according to recent data from the European Office of Statistics (Eurostat) processed by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (FEPEX).
From January to September 2023, Morocco’s exports of fresh produce to the EU totaled €1.83 billion, up 6% compared to the same period in 2022. In terms of volume, Morocco exported 1.04 million tons of fruits and vegetables to the bloc over the nine months.
South Africa and Peru followed behind Morocco as the second and third largest suppliers to the EU market. South Africa saw its exports grow 17% to €1.54 billion, while Peru’s exports rose 9% to €1.36 billion. In volume, South Africa shipped 1.09 million tons and Peru 662,258 tons.
After the top three, Turkey, Ecuador and Costa Rica rounded out the major third-country suppliers of fresh fruits and vegetables to the EU. Turkey registered robust growth of 33.5%, exporting €1.18 billion worth of produce. Ecuador shipped €953 million (+18%) and Costa Rica €945 million (+5%).
In terms of volume, Turkey exported 843,297 tons, Ecuador 1.3 million tons, and Costa Rica another 1.3 million tons to the EU market.
According to the FEPEX data, Colombia ranked seventh among non-EU suppliers, exporting €789 million and 930,000 tons of fruits and vegetables. Egypt came in eighth, shipping €761 million and 1.13 million tons.
Morocco’s position as the EU’s primary supplier of fresh produce can be attributed to several factors.
Firstly, its proximity to Europe reduces transportation costs and delivery times.
Secondly, Morocco benefits from favorable climatic conditions that allow for a year-round growing season for fruits and vegetables destined for export markets.
Thirdly, Morocco has actively invested in improving its agriculture sector, implementing advanced irrigation systems, greenhouses, cold storage and transportation infrastructure. This has enabled increased yields and quality.
Moroccan agricultural exports play a vital role in the kingdom’s economy. The sector employs about 45% of the population and represents 15% of Morocco’s GDP, according to the International Trade Administration. Continued growth in Morocco’s fresh produce exports translates to more rural economic development and jobs.
With its competitive advantages in geographic location, production capacity and trade relationships, Morocco seems poised to maintain its ranking as the top supplier of fresh fruits and vegetables to the lucrative EU market into the future.
