Rabat – Morocco ranked as the eighth-best African country in the quality of life for women, according to a report from the data website Insider Monkey.
The ranking is based on professionals and experts’ studies adhering to the public’s opinion.
It takes into consideration the quality of life according to the governance adhering to women/humanitarian equality laws, benefits and privileges, and economic situation, among other criteria.
“In a world marked by modernization and globalization, where people connect with individuals of various nationalities and ethnicities, Morocco stands out as a country where women can thrive,” the report says of Morocco.
It adds that despite the persisting practice of polygamous marriage in Moroccan culture, recent laws “ensure equal rights for both men and women.”
“Women, like men, have the freedom to choose their life partners, emphasizing equal rights for both genders. This inclusion makes Morocco one of the best African countries to live in as a woman in 2024,” the report reads.
While Morocco has made significant strides in advancing women’s rights, converging reports and studies argue that the country has a long way to go to achieve gender parity.
A 2023 Afrobarometer survey revealed that Moroccans overwhelmingly view unequal pay and opportunities in the workplace as the most pressing women’s rights issue facing the North African country.
According to the survey, gender-based violence is still the second most important women’s rights issue for Moroccans.
While a majority (68%) of surveyed Moroccans believe that gender-based violence is “not very common” or “not at all common” in their communities, approximately three in 10 (31%) disagree, the survey found.
