Rabat – Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will carry out an official visit to Morocco on Wednesday.
Spanish news agency EFE said today that Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manel Albares will accompany Sanchez during his visit.
The visit will be Sanchez’ first official trip to the North African country in his capacity as a prime minister for a second term.
Sanchez also visited Morocco last year in February, when he chaired a high-level meeting between the two countries.
EFE said that Sanchez’s trip agenda does not include any mention of whether he will meet with King Mohammed VI.
The visit comes as the two countries renew their determination to continue boosting bilateral ties at all levels, including in areas of trade and political dialogue.
Rabat and Madrid share good diplomatic ties, which have been strengthened since March 2022, when the European country decided to endorse Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most “serious and credible political solution” to end the dispute in the Western Sahara.
The significant trade exchanges between the two countries establishes Spain as Morocco’s top customer and supplier.
According to statistics shared last year by Albares, these exchanges generated €20 billion in profit.
Morocco is also Spain’s third largest trading partner outside the EU, surpassed only by the US and the UK, Albares said in December 2023– where he emphasized that his country’s partnership with Morocco is the leading priority for Madrid’s foreign policy.
“The strategic partnership between Morocco and Spain is now a multidimensional partnership because it encompasses all areas,” he said.
In April 2022 Morocco and Spain adopted a roadmap of cooperation, ending a year-long diplomatic crisis between the two countries. The crisis was triggered by Spain’s decision to host Polisario leader Brahim Ghali for his hospitalization a year earlier in 2021.
Spain’s decision to endorse the Moroccan autonomy initiative turned a new page towards enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries.
