Rabat – The US Department of State has given the green light to the sale of 612 “Javelin” missiles and 200 launching units to Morocco.
Valued at $260 million, this deal aims to bolster the North African nation’s long-term defense capabilities, according to statements from US officials.
The approval, announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on Tuesday, March 19, signifies a strategic commitment to enhancing Morocco’s ability to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The missiles, part of the FGM-148 Javelin series, renowned for their precision and effectiveness, are set to be deployed alongside related equipment, including Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLUs).
A portable anti-tank weapon developed in the 1980s, the “Javelin” missile system has been in active service since 1996, offering advanced target-locking capabilities and infrared guidance.
Manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp, these missiles boast a maximum range of 2,500 meters, making them a formidable asset in modern warfare scenarios.
In addition to the weaponry itself, the sale encompasses comprehensive support provisions, including simulation rounds, technical assistance, and extensive training programs for Moroccan military personnel.
Highlighting the broader geopolitical implications, the DSCA emphasized the sale’s role in advancing US foreign policy objectives, particularly in bolstering the security of key allies outside the NATO framework.
As a longstanding US partner in the region, Morocco stands to benefit from this partnership, further solidifying its position as a stabilizing force in North Africa.
Importantly, US officials underscored that the sale would not upset the regional military balance, assuaging concerns regarding potential ramifications on neighboring nations.
The FGM-148 Javelin missile, known for its “fire and forget” technology, represents a pinnacle in anti-tank warfare, designed to replace outdated systems like the M47 Dragon missile.
With its precision targeting and versatility, the Javelin has become a weapon of choice for military forces worldwide since its introduction in 1996.
