Rabat – Morocco’s security services thwarted an international drug trafficking and seized 10 tons and 542 kilograms of cannabis in Agadir, the Moroccan General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) said in a statement today.

Police in the city carried out the operation in cooperation with the Royal Navy and the Royal Gendarmerie after receiving intelligence from the DGST.

DGST research and investigations notably led to the detection of a fishing boat designated for the execution of the international drug operation, the statement added.

The Agadir police then proceeded to intercept the boat on Sunday morning, arresting 13 individuals suspected of being involved in the criminal activity.

The suspects have been placed in police custody pending an investigation to uncover further details about the case and identify potential accomplices.

The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to address drug trafficking.

Last year, Moroccan police recorded and processed 99,513 cases related to drug trafficking, proceeding to arrest a whopping 130,212 individuals involved in drug trafficking crimes.

During anti-drug trafficking operations, Moroccan police also seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis last year, a 17% decrease compared to the previous year.

Police equally seized nearly two tonnes of cocaine as well as six kilograms and 880 grams of heroin last year.

Meanwhile, Moroccan security services intercepted shipments of psychotropic substances amounting to 1.2 million tablets, including brands of ecstasy.
