In a surprising development, the Moroccan police concluded that a live on-air robbery during the “Momo Morning Show” aired by Hit Radio featuring Mohamed Bousfiha known as Momo was a staged incident aimed at increasing audience engagement for the radio station.
The Momo Morning Show took an unexpected turn last week when a caller, purportedly a radio enthusiast speaking to Momo, suddenly exclaimed “a thief, a thief,” implying that he was being robbed live on air.
In response, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that provincial police in Casablanca initiated a judicial investigation over the past weekend to identify all those involved in fabricating a fictitious crime and dissemination of false information that undermines citizens’ sense of security through information systems and insulting an established authority by making false statements.”
DGSN said that security services responded with “seriousness” to the phone call received by a private radio station, discussing alleged theft and presumed inaction of security services.
“They treated the call as a report of a real crime, opening a judicial investigation” to arrest suspects and establish the necessary legal responsibilities.
However, investigations by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) revealed that the caller had assumed a false identity and fabricated a fictitious scene of robbery with the assistance of another individual.
This scheme was for personal gain and also to increase the radio station’s audience, the police statement noted, stressing: “Continued inquiries into this matter by the provincial judicial police department are underway under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.”
DGSN said that digital expertise is being conducted to verify the possibility of incitement or pre-coordination between the suspects and the program team that received the call.
