Rabat – Salim Berrada, a 38-year-old Moroccan photographer, is facing allegations of serial rape and sexual assault against 17 women spanning from 2014 to 2016 in France.
Dubbed the “Tinder rapist” trial, Berrada’s case has drawn widespread attention for its chilling portrayal of alleged predation facilitated through the online dating platform.
He faced his accusers for the last time on the eighth day of proceedings. Berrada, who is being tried for thirteen counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault, has denied all accusations, according to French media,
“I have never drugged anyone. I have never had a modus operandi to rape anyone,” he said during the trial as quoted by BFMTV.
According to the outlet, the 17 women provided nearly identical testimonies. They reportedly described a well-established pattern that began with contact through dating apps or social media, followed by a photoshoot in Berrada’s Paris studio, consumption of alcohol, suspicion of drugging, and “non-consensual, often violent, sexual encounters.”
During his final testimony, Berrada expressed a desire to understand the allegations against him but maintained his innocence, suggesting some accusers may have lied or exaggerated their claims.
“There are people who slept with me to look good when they didn’t really want to. There are people who slept with me to get their photos and when they didn’t get the photos, they say they suffered abuse,” Berrada claimed.
He admitted to manipulative behavior but denied any illegal activity. He described his actions as immoral rather than criminal.
Psychiatric experts presented a contrasting view during the trial as they described Berrada as “narcissistic, manipulative, and lacking empathy.”
They suggested his actions were driven by a desire for control and gratification rather than a sexual addiction. The experts portrayed him as a predator who used charm and manipulation to obtain superficial consent.
Despite the expert opinions, Berrada continued to deny any non-consensual sexual activity.
The trial has garnered significant attention, with the verdict expected on Friday. Berrada faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges against him.
