Morocco’s Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe aim to strengthen cooperation in different sectors, including advancing democracy.
The two parties emphasized their commitment during a meeting between the Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, and President of the Parliamentary Assembly Theodoros Rousopoulos, who is currently on an official visit to Morocco to take part in a debate organized by the Moroccan parliament and the European body.
The debate will take place on Tuesday, marking the conclusion of the “supporting the Development of Parliament in the “Strengthening Democracy in Morocco 2020-2024” project.
The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented by the Council of Europe.
Morocco’s news agency MAP said both parties discussed various aspects of cooperation between the Moroccan parliament and the parliamentary assembly, with Talbi Alami highlighting the results of the joint parliamentary cooperation and the programs adopted by both parties in the context of advancing democracy.
Alami also outlined the major initiatives that Morocco launched concerning the consolidation of democratic institutions, the promotion of human rights, and the improvement of the status of Moroccan women in society and elected institutions.
During the meeting, Rousopoulos also expressed appreciation for the level of cooperation between the assembly and the Moroccan parliament and the progress made through this collaboration, indicating a strong desire to continue cooperation in other areas.
He commended Morocco’s role in developing stable relations between Africa and Europe.
“The reforms undertaken in recent years by Morocco under the leadership of his majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision are in line with the principles of the Council of Europe,” he said.
Rousopoulos also met with other senior officials, including Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita.
