Rabat – In a reaffirmation of their commitment to bolster bilateral relations, Morocco and Spain met yesterday to engage  in discussions aimed at enhancing cooperation in higher education and research.

The meeting, held on Wednesday in Madrid, saw the participation of key figures including Spanish Minister of Science, Innovation, and Universities, Diana Morant Ripoll, and Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui.

According to MAP, both parties underscored the significance of advancing collaboration in higher education and research, aligning with the objectives outlined in the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation, as well as within the framework of the established political dialogue.

Highlighting the strategic importance of bilateral relations, the ministers emphasized the momentum generated during the 12th High-Level Meeting between the two countries held in Rabat on February 2, 2023.

They expressed their intent to build upon this momentum to further propel cooperation in science, innovation, and higher education.

Miraoui stressed the importance of facilitating student and doctoral mobility, fostering academic collaboration in research and innovation, and promoting joint doctoral supervision.

The ministers welcomed the signing of numerous agreements between Spanish universities and their Moroccan counterparts, signaling a mutual commitment to strengthen academic and scientific ties.

Following the discussions, a joint communique was signed, paving the way for the establishment of a joint commission tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Research and Development.

This commission, comprising representatives from both countries, aims to  ensure the effective execution of the terms agreed upon during the 12th High-Level Meeting.

On the Moroccan side, the commission will include prominent figures such as the director of the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research. Jamila El Alami, and the director of Higher Education and Pedagogical Development, Khalid Berrada.

The Spanish delegation will be represented by key officials including the secretaries general for Research, Innovation, and Universities, and the director general of Planning, Coordination, and Knowledge Transfer.
