Rabat – King Mohammed VI led the Eid Al Fitr prayer today at the Al Mohammadi Mosque in Casablanca. The Eid prayer was broadcast live on radio and television at 10:30 AM local time.
In addition to Morocco, several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, France, and Australia, are celebrating the religious holiday on Wednesday.
Other countries like Bangladesh and Brunei will observe the religious holiday on Thursday.
Different countries may celebrate Eid Al Fitr on different days due to variations in the sighting of the moon, which marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal, the month immediately following Ramadan.
The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, meaning that months begin with the sighting of the new moon.
In celebration of Eid Al Fitr, King Mohammed VI has granted royal pardon to 2,097 individuals who were convicted by various courts across the country, according to a statement from the Ministry of Justice.
The royal pardon includes various forms of relief, including reducing prison sentences, commuting death sentences to life imprisonment, and remitting fines.
The royal pardon comes as part of the monarch’s tradition of granting clemency on religious and national occasions.
Eid Al-Fitr is celebrated by Muslims worldwide with prayers, feasts, and acts of charity. People dress in their best clothes to mark the occasion, which begins with special Eid prayer.
Eid prayers are followed by visits to family and friends who gather to enjoy traditional meals, exchange gifts, and share in the joyous atmosphere.
