Rabat – The Popular Movement (MP) is a cornerstone of Moroccan politics, boasting a rich history and a commitment to tackling the nation’s contemporary challenges.

MP members assert that the party has consistently advocated for a pluralistic, democratic, and modern Morocco, both in government and opposition. Now, with Tarik Cherradi, the party sets sail into a new era, blending tradition with innovation to tackle contemporary challenges and pave the way for inclusive progress.

“After years of success in business, I felt a sense of duty towards my community and my country,” he remarked, elucidating his transition’s impetus. “Politics offers a platform to directly serve people, influence policies, and shape the future.”

Cherradi’s journey from successful businessman to political leader highlights “a profound sense of duty towards his fellow citizens and the nation at large.”

His recent ascent to the presidency of the Casa Nouaceur prefectural bureau of the Popular Movement represents more than just a political milestone; it symbolizes a deep-seated commitment to community welfare ingrained in his familial heritage.

Morocco World News (MWN) met with Tariq Cherradi and Youssef Bounoual, a member of the national council of the party, to discuss how the MP navigates tradition and modernity in an era of change.

Building an inclusive and resilient Morocco

Cherradi’s transition from successful businessman to politician reflects the party’s commitment to public service. He emphasized to MWN the importance of “social inclusion and economic sustainability,” highlighting the need to address socio-economic inequalities and empower marginalized communities.

Cherradi underlined the importance of active listening and citizen participation in shaping policy. He acknowledged the party’s heritage but recognizes “the need for innovation and adaptation to address contemporary challenges.”

His vision for societal progress transcends mere rhetoric; it’s grounded in practical initiatives aimed at fostering social inclusion, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

Cherradi’s extensive experience in community development has imbued him with a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted challenges facing Moroccan society.

“I’ve learned that social sustainability is essential for building inclusive and resilient societies,” Cherradi asserted. “A society where everyone has a place will promote economic growth and reduce poverty.”

Moreover, his leadership philosophy emphasizes the imperative of “combating inequalities to foster social cohesion”—a cornerstone of sustainable progress. Through active engagement and participatory decision-making, Cherradi seeks to empower marginalized communities and amplify their voices in the political arena.

Preserving heritage, embracing change

Youssef Bounoual, a member of the MP’s National Council, articulated the party’s principled approach towards fostering a “prosperous, equitable, and resilient Morocco.”

Reflecting on the recent 14th national congress held in November 2022, Bounoual highlighted the party’s unwavering allegiance to Morocco’s institutions, emphasizing the intrinsic link between political participation and national progress.

“Our party is deeply rooted in Moroccan values, embodying the principle of ‘Tamarabit,’ which signifies authenticity intertwined with modernity,” he argued,  stressing the party’s inclusive ethos.

Central to the MP’s agenda is the imperative of revitalizing political engagement, particularly among the youth, who constitute the vanguard of tomorrow’s leadership. Bounoual advocates for a paradigm shift in political discourse, one grounded in pragmatism and genuine concern for Morocco’s future.

“We must convey a message rooted in reality, a courageous discourse that prioritizes Morocco’s interests,” he asserted, highlighting the party’s proactive stance in mobilizing citizens towards constructive civic participation.

“While we are currently in opposition, our role transcends mere dissent; we are a force of proposal, offering constructive critiques and pragmatic solutions to the government,” Bounoual explained.

With organizational efforts underway at the regional level, the MP is poised to emerge as a formidable electoral alternative, grounded in principles of inclusivity and responsiveness to citizens’ needs.

Consolidating democracy and public freedoms

As the custodian of the Popular Movement’s rich legacy, Cherradi is prepared to navigate the party through the complexities of contemporary politics while upholding its core values.

“We must preserve the fundamental values that have guided the party for decades,” he affirmed. “But we must also adapt to current realities and embrace innovation.”

Unlocking the full potential of dynamic regions like Casablanca-Nouaceur is central to Cherradi’s agenda. He envisions fostering strategic partnerships and leveraging existing assets to stimulate sustainable and inclusive growth across various sectors.

Addressing the evolution of democracy and public freedoms in Morocco, Bounoual is keen to put an emphasis on the symbiotic relationship between political participation and national development.

“Morocco’s journey towards democratization has been gradual, marked by institutional reforms and societal evolution,” he observed, acknowledging the crucial role of citizen engagement in strengthening democratic institutions.

The Popular Movement envisions a future of inclusive governance and sustainable progress, inspired by Morocco’s rich history and heritage.

“Morocco stands at a crossroads of opportunity, with its strategic position bridging continents and its people’s resilience,” Bounoual concluded, echoing the party’s unwavering commitment to harnessing Morocco’s potential for the collective benefit of its citizens.

The party’s allegiance to constitutional monarchy and its commitment to preserving Morocco’s spiritual security have been unwavering. Moreover, its advocacy for the integration of Amazigh identity into the national cultural fabric underscores its dedication to fostering inclusivity and cultural pluralism.

Founded in 1957 on the principles of ruralism and agrarianism, the MP has played a pivotal role in shaping Morocco’s political landscape. The party emerged from the country’s struggle for independence, serving as a legitimate extension of the resistance movement.

Initially banned by the government, the party persevered and held its founding congress after the establishment of public freedoms in 1958. Despite facing various obstacles, the MP has remained steadfast in its dedication to Morocco’s institutions.
