A new report from the financial website Insider Monkey has ranked Morocco among the top 20 countries in terms of artillery strength.
The report, issued on Sunday last week, listed Morocco as the 20th top country with the largest artillery arsenal. Morocco’s artillery arsenal includes 565 self-propelled artillery, 306 towed artillery, and 208 rocket projects.
The report also recalled Morocco’s investment in upgrading its military strength, noting the US State Department’s approval of a potential $524 million sale of Himars artillery rocket system to Morocco.
With a score of 0.393, the report said that Morocco has a total artillery unit that stands at 1,079.
Morocco has topped the list of largest arms importers in Africa for years. The country has considerably invested in its military to upgrade its army resources and equipment, especially from its traditional supplier, the US.
New data released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), ranked Morocco as the 29th largest importer of arms among the world’s 40 largest arms importers.
According to the report, Morocco maintains the same position it had in SIPRI’s previous report of 2023.
The US continues to maintain its position as the largest exporter of arms to Morocco with 69%, followed by France (14%), and Israel (11%), the report detailed.
In 2024, Morocco allocated MAD 124.7 billion ($12.88 billion) to its defense industry.
Algeria is the 21st major import of arms worldwide. Despite being one of the countries that heavily invest in its military, Algeria is absent from the Insider Monkey’s list of countries with the most artillery.
Insider Monkey cites North Korea as the 19th on the list, while Poland is 18th, Romania 17th, Japan 16th, Vietnam 15th, and Egypt 14th.
Pakistan is 13th on the list, while Greece is 12th, Ukraine is 11th, Iran 10, Finland is 9th, and Israel is 8th.
Saudi Arabia is 6th and is followed by Turkiye, while India is 5th.
